About
Utopia represents an idealized but closed world. The dystopias, on the other hand, are there to reflect the anxieties of our times. But we can easily open these fields by describing “possitopias” […].

To be possitopian is to expand the cone of possible futures.

manifesto
We are living in a time of profoundly intertwined global and systemic crises.
One thing is certain: on a global scale, human activities are having a drastic impact on the collapse of biodiversity, climate change and other ecosystem upheavals. And yet, as a species, we still don’t seem to be able to offer any real alternatives. We persist, in a form of collective denial, in going against every law of balance in the living world, gradually destroying the very conditions of our existence.
Our lifestyles, our ways of living and co-habiting, of producing, consuming and trading, our approach to the planet’s resources and our energy flows are no longer in phase with the scientific knowledge that we have so brilliantly acquired. Added to this are political and economic crises, pandemics, exacerbated inequalities, social tensions and armed conflicts, misinformation, relationships of power and domination, exploitation and exclusion… How then, in this context, can we envisage the future of our species? Artificial ‘intelligence’, a return to the land, technological innovation, sobriety, geo-engineering, degrowth, connected systems, permaculture, the colonisation of the universe?
If humanity has survived until now, it’s thanks to its ability to adapt, its sense of cooperation and community, its creativity and ingenuity. With this in mind, the possitopia collective aims to explore possible futures together through creative workshops, participatory projects and immersive art events.
Beyond the reductive and limiting utopia-dystopia dualism, thinking in terms of possitopias means imagining, lucidly, critically and pragmatically, the best while taking into account the worst. The possitopia method invites us to adopt non-linear, adaptive and fractal approaches to envisioning futures where decline and regeneration are interconnected, rather than seeing them as opposites. Our projects are an invitation to step out of our comfort zone, to question our relationship with the world, with ourselves, and with living things, to open up possible futures, to explore new practices, and to contribute to the construction of new narratives that we human beings seem to need more than ever.
Through participatory artistic creation, we aim to offer enriching, powerful and cathartic experiences, to create moments of community and spaces for experimentation, and to give ourselves the conceptual and creative means to explore together other ways of inhabiting the world. Our approach is intellectual, physical, emotional, relational and aesthetic all at once.
We reject the status quo, paralysis, fatalism and inward-looking attitudes. Through our work we want to help cultivate a free, aware, emancipated, ingenious, resilient, caring and supportive humanity to meet the major challenges of our time. Merging ideas and points of view. Transcending dualisms and contradictions. Dissolving the boundaries between disciplines, between artists and audiences, between producers and consumers. Hybridizing knowledge, representations, beliefs, narratives and the arts. Creating opportunities for learning, giving us confidence in our ability to act, and thus overcoming our anxiety. Encourage personal responsibility, creativity and collective action.
We believe in the transformative power of the imagination.
Who we are
possitopia is first and foremost a collective founded in Berlin in 2020 that has come together, in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic, around a shared vision, values and commitment. Having already collaborated on a number of events in the past, we decided to combine our varied skills and experience to give shape to this new project with a participatory and transformative vocation. Until 2023, our activities were centred on the city of Berlin, our shared home, and supported by the eponymous association possitopia e.V. We are now more dispersed across the continent and aspire to put down more lasting roots in the regions.
What we do
We promote artistic collaboration and artistic projects on topics related to human-made climate change and its effects on nature and society.
We organize and curate art and cultural events with a focus on visual, performing and culinary arts, photography, music, film, literature, dance, and discourse that invite reflection, exploration, and experimentation of possible futures.
We impart knowledge and creative practice through workshops and interactive events.
Do we perhaps already have the key to change within ourselves?
Support
The possitopia project and collective is supported by the non-profit association FMR. In the face of the climate emergency, our aim is to raise awareness, open up perspectives, encourage creativity and collective action, and put in place processes for emancipation and empowerment.
